This attractive mixed woodland near Brentwood is long established and includes some ancient mature oaks and hornbeam coppice. A stream runs through the wood and floods in winter, creating several marshy patches with alder trees and some interesting flowers.
The eastern section was once part of Weald Common, since taken over by pioneer trees such as birch and holly. To maintain its diversity the Woodland Trust is encouraging the natural regeneration of native trees such as oak, hornbeam and rowan.
Many birds breed here. Siskins and sometimes redpolls feed in the alders in winter.
Visiting
Turn off the A128 north of Brentwood on to a minor road to Bentley. Turn right after the church in Bentley and the entrance is 300m further on, on the left. Park by St Paul's church, off Snakes Hill.
Buses from Brentwood to Stondon Massey and Ongar run along the A128.
Accessible at all times.
Spring for early flowers and songbirds; autumn for fungi.
